Family Trip to San Diego
Oh, San Diego.. How I have missed you.
The kids are FINALLY on winter break and we've decided to take a short trip to San Diego. We stayed in our RV trailer at the KOA San Diego Metro and visited the San Diego Zoo!
KOA San Diego Metro in our RV Trailer
My hubby did some research on where we should hang our hat for the night. We usually try to book an RV space that the kids would enjoy which usually includes a pool. On this trip, we stayed at the KOA San Diego Metro. And man, they did not disappoint!
I recently sprained my ankle, so I knew planning this trip was gonna be a bit more tricky. I booked an RV spot closer to the pool so it would be easier for us to get there and back. It is a gated area that is open during the day and requires a code to come in at night. This whole area was well maintained and very clean.
I was super excited to find that they had coffee at the Sand Castle Cafe which is right next to the pool. We got coffee and breakfast there in the morning.
The pool area was our favorite part! It's very private with bushes and plants throughout. Multiple gates are located all around the pool for more convenient access depending what part of the KOA you are coming from. Pool hours are from 8am-10pm. They have 2 jacuzzis. The one in the back is more private and for adults only. Be sure to bring your towels and goggles and remember there is no lifeguard on duty. There’s an outdoor shower for rinsing off, bathrooms and also private showers right outside the pool gate.
They do have rentals available, but if u have bikes, scooters, or electric scooters, be sure to bring them. You can bring your own basketball and shoot hoops at the court. They have a ping pong table, horseshoe, humongous jumping pillows and a kids play area.
Check out time for cabins is 11am and our check out time for RV trailers was 12. You can communicate with them though text with any questions. I was actually able to add another night to our stay through text which was super convenient.
This was an amazing place to stay at and we look forward to staying at more KOA's on our upcoming trips in our RV Trailer!
San Diego Zoo with my sprained ankle
We always look forward to visiting our favorite zoo! It's the biggest one we've been to!
The goal was to arrive at the zoo by 9am so I can rent an electric scooter since its first come first serve. We got there around 9:30am and I was able to rent an electric scooter for $60 after taxes. I'm sure they keep the rentals inside the zoo entrance for safety and other reasons, but I wish it was more accessible from the parking lot unloading area. It was sooooo hard for me to walk all the way to their rental area. You can get dropped off at the unloading area, walk a bit past the big lion, get through the entrance and then it’s a bit to your left. Which with my sprained ankle, wasn’t ideal. It would be better if you had your own electric scooter going in.
The electric scooter made it a lot easier to get around the zoo especially on all the hills. They don’t recommend going up the big hills (they give you a map with their recommendations), but I did have to go up a big hill and their scooter did well. I think my family would have been extremely tired pushing me uphill if I was in a wheelchair. And I would be worried going downhill in case I couldn’t break in time. The electric scooter was worth the price because we were there for almost 8 hours and we still weren’t able to do everything!
We did go on the bus tour toward the end. I recommend staying on the top and the right side if you're able to. I feel like you see more of the animals on that side.

Til next time..
As we ended our trip, we were tired but happy. It was a wonderful reminder of why family road trips are so memorable. We took many photos and videos, created countless memories, and enjoyed our time together more than anything. If you’re considering a family trip to the San Diego Zoo, I definitely recommend it. Here’s to more family adventures in the future!
